The Fishermen's and Seamen's Memorial Chapel on Pier 45

This small, wood-framed structure hidden on Pier 45 is the Fishermen's and Seamen's Memorial Chapel. Built in 1979 on the site of a former Coast Guard building, the chapel stands as a tribute to generations of fishermen and seamen, and as a memorial to hundreds of men and women who have died at sea. Plaques bearing their names can be found on the chapel's walls.

The campanile bell tower was added in 2006. The bell housed within was created in 1860 and is rung on special occasions as a reminder of "the wharfs legacy" and "the men and women who have dedicated their lives to the sea and its harvests."
